2 journals; scrapbook; correspondence; maps; and a photograph documenting the career of James George Smith Neill of the East India Company during the Second Burmese War and the Sepoy Rebellion. In volume 1 (Aug. 1852-June 1854), entries concern military matters; Neill's opinion of his fellow officers and compatriots and of the Burmans; and daily life in the British Indian Army. 2 manuscript maps illustrate engagements at Pegu and Martaban. Includes copies of 12 letters written by Neill mostly from Rangoon on the last pages. Collection includes an edited transcript of the diary by Paul H. Turney. Volume 2 (Oct. 1, 1856-Sept. 24, 1857) consists of almost daily entries beginning while Neill was at home in Ayrshire on leave and ending the day before his death at Lucknow while he served as Brigadier-General of the Madras Fusiliers. In most entries, Neill recorded military developments and his opinion of fellow officers and events. A letter (Aug. 1, 1857) from Neill to Havelock in which the latter is accused of having "fallen back" is tipped into the volume. Volume 3 (1857-1859) is a scrapbook containing numerous clippings documenting Neill's career and articles written in memoriam. Collection also includes a page from the Brighton Herald (Sept. 10, 1824.).
